Peter Pan, as always at StubHub.com!
Finding Neverland didn’t emerge from thin air, but rather from the visionary talents of Knee, whose 1990 play The Man Who Was Peter Pan inspired the film, which was of course inspired by the original play, Peter Pan. Rooted by Weinstein Live Entertainment, little has been set in regards to the future of Finding Neverland, but the future looks bright for all those involved in this stage adaption, considering the film won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score and was nominated for six others, including Best Picture. During the December reading Kate Baldwin, Christian Borle (as Barrie), Brian D’Addario, Michael D’Addario, Blythe Danner, Erin Davie, Dalton Harrod, Tom Hewitt, Katie Holmes, Marc Kudisch, Daniel Marconi, Anne L Nathan, Denis O’Hare, Brynn O’Malley, Clarke Thorell, John Patrick Walker and Wayne Wilcox stood in for the Rob Ashford directed cast, which has yet to screen auditions.
The Man Who was Peter Pan received loads of acclaim when it appeared in the late ‘90s Off-Off-Broadway, enough to see a purchase by Miramax producer Harvey Weinstein, who made the film with a screenplay by David Magee. Riding off the success of the film, Weinstein suggested Knee for writing of the musical libretto with no restrictions about cast size or approach. “The soul of the movie is adaptable but it really has to be about reinventing the movie and the play into a new experience,” Knee told Playbill.com. Researching Barrie more than for his previous work with the subject, even traveling to the Yale library where an exhibit dedicated to Barrie is located, Knee says “I’ve immersed myself in more stories about Barrie, about the period, the letters between Barrie and the boys.”
Peter Pan’s 100th anniversary was marked by the release of Finding Neverland, a story that intrigued Knee more than other stories he has worked on (Little Women), saying “I just identified with it so strongly.” Peter Pan has long been a stage staple, and as always its tickets can be found at StubHub. The shows Broadway premiere was in October 1954, followed by revivals in 1979, 1999, 1991, 1998 and 1999. The year it premiered on stage Mary Martin, who played Peter, won a Tony for Best Actress, while Cyril Ritchard won Best Actor.
